Sons
Sons refer to the attempts made in communication toward satisfying the basic human need for connectivity. Sons are objects that represent the things we produce in the form of sensation and information which are projected from our bodies and sent into the world. In that sense, Sons are offspring and follow the idea that once children leave home, they never return (in the same way). This notion corresponds with the function of memory in that while we may retain imagery that resemble events as they occurred originally, they will never reappear or reoccur in the exact same way. Likewise, signals or language communicated cannot be sent out again as they were at first. And once these have left the body, if they have not been received in the way in which they were designed, they are potentially lost (in the world outside) forever. All sons leave.
These works have a precious quality by way of size and appearance. Sons resemble children's shoes or stockings. They are small, shabby and dysfunctional. They are both objects and carriers of information, which is largely contained and can only be read by handling the objects. This interaction allows the viewer/reader to appreciate the texture of the objects and potentially have a layered sensory experience.
Sons refers to a human experience. It is a recognizable term that comes with any number of associations, most of which are valid to the intention of the objects (carried in the objects) and all of which are essential to having a shared experience with the viewer.
